Babbitt Ice Arena and Event Center

Here is a hidden gem on the Northeast Iron Range that some people may not be aware of. Better yet, it is available to rent during the year when ice time and locations may be difficult to obtain for tournaments and other events.

Babbitt's Ice Arena is city owned and operated from mid-October through mid-March. This facility is used by the public for open skating, girls and boys hockey, and the figure skating club as well as the local school system. The arena was recently updated with energy efficient lighting and new locker rooms. In the past year the arena has gone through a maintenance program that repaired the roof and replaced two older compressors with newer models so that our great ice standards are maintained. Ice time is available for rent at a very reasonable $65 per hour.

During the off season, the arena may be rented for other events.

Call Recreation Coordinator Joe Scherer at (218) 827-3568 to book your event while openings are still available.

PolyMet Update

Phase 1 of PolyMet is $350 million dollars. CEO Joe Scipioni said that's like an investment of almost $1 million dollars a day, for a year.
"That's what our region is missing out on, while we wait for permits," he told the group of chamber members in Virginia. He was speaking at the Laurentian Chamber luncheon on Tuesday.

Governor signs BWCAW land swap bill over objections | Duluth News Tribune | Duluth, Minnesota

Legislation that would trade away state-owned land that’s now locked inside the federal Boundary Waters was signed into law Friday by Gov. Mark Dayton after clearing the House and Senate earlier this week.
The bill opens the door for the state to trade more than 86,000 acres of state school trust fund land in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for an equal value of federal land outside the 1.1 million acre wilderness.
